Unlocking the AI Paradox: Is Your Organization Missing its True Potential?

Jul 3, 2023

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is getting everyone excited and a bit worried too, because it could totally change industries and create amazing possibilities. But there's also the fear that it might take over jobs and become smarter than us humans.

To really embrace AI or any other sleek and transformative new technology, organizations need to create a culture that loves innovation, always wants to improve, and encourages thinking outside the box. Here are some things to think about:

Try something out of your comfort zone

1.    Embrace Curiosity and Experimentation - Get Curious and Try New Things! Let your employees explore and experiment with AI and other cool technologies. Give them chances to learn, play around, and see how these tools can make their work better and bring positive changes. For example, Walmart has an AI program where employees can learn about AI and how it can improve the retail experience. They even have a "sandbox" where employees can play with AI without messing up anything important. The program includes online courses, workshops, and mentorship opportunities.

2.    Foster Collaboration and Knowledge Sharing – Team Up! Create an environment where people from different teams and departments can work together and share what they know. Talk openly about AI, its potential uses, and any fears or ethical concerns. By bringing all your brains together, you can make smart choices and overcome challenges that come with using AI. For example, McKinsey hosted an AI hackathon in 2021, where employees from across the company worked together to develop AI-based solutions for healthcare challenges. It was a hit, and they came up with some amazing ideas to make healthcare better.

3.    Encourage Lifelong Learning - Keep Learning Forever! Establish a culture of continuous learning and development and make sure everyone in your organization keeps learning and growing, so they understand AI and what it means for their work. Give them training, workshops, and chances to get better at using AI.  For example, Procter & Gamble (P&G) has an AI program that helps employees learn about AI for social problem-solving. They have online courses, workshops, and mentors to guide them. They even have a platform where employees can find AI resources and stay up to date with the latest research. P&G also brings in AI experts for webinars and workshops so employees can learn from the best.

4.    Foster Psychological Safety and Create a Safe Space for Open Dialogue - Make People Feel Safe to Talk!  Encourage your team to openly talk about AI or any other technology they're unsure about. Create a space where people can share their thoughts, ideas, and worries without feeling judged. For example, Bank of America has a leader who openly discusses concerns about AI, including surveillance and bias, while recognizing AI’s potential for positive impact. The leader is committed to using AI responsibly. The company fosters open discussions by providing a dedicated forum for employees to share thoughts and ideas about AI.

Embrace Risk

5.    Encourage Risk-Taking and Learning from Failure - Take Risks and Learn from Mistakes! Build a culture that isn't afraid of taking risks and sees failure as a chance to grow and learn. Encourage employees to try out AI, learn from any hiccups along the way, and share their experiences with everyone. For example: Siemens' CEO, Roland Busch, has been a vocal advocate for risk-taking and learning from failure. He says that "failure is not the opposite of success, it is part of success." This message has been echoed by other Siemens leaders, creating a culture where employees feel comfortable taking risks. Siemens rewards employees who take risks and learn from mistakes, such as through their AI program, which recognizes employees for their significant contributions to AI development.

6.    Provide Support and Feedback – 2 key elements! Make sure employees know they can get support and give feedback whenever they need it. Encourage constructive feedback and create a collaborative and friendly atmosphere where everyone feels heard and valued. For example: Johnson & Johnson's has an employee feedback mechanism that allows employees to provide feedback on AI initiatives - It is anonymous and confidential, which encourages employees to share their honest opinions

In all the AI excitement, remember that AI is just a tool, like any other cool new technology. It helps us innovate and transform. The real power come from how organizations approach and integrate AI within their operations, culture, and strategy. By focusing on well-structured and healthy change management, creating the right culture, and fostering psychological safety, organizations can navigate the complexities of AI implementation effectively. This approach ensures that the focus remains on leveraging AI or any other technology to enhance human capabilities, improve decision-making, and drive positive outcomes.
